Depression

More than 20 million people in the US are affected by depression and unfortunately, many of them do not know that it is a medical condition that can be treated. When one is depressed, he/she constantly feels sad and left out. Difficulty falling asleep each night, loss in weight and energy are common symptoms of depression. There is a constant feeling of hopelessness that sometimes can become severe enough to produce suicidal thoughts which sometimes are put into action.

Depression can last from a few days to becoming a chronic disease. The sooner some medical help is sought, the easier it is to treat it and mitigate the chances of its relapse. If left untreated, the person leads a very unsatisfied and unenergized life. Depression causes mental pain to not only the person affected by it but also to all the family members. The mental as well as physical development is much less in children with one or more depressed parents.

Depression can be hereditary or can get triggered due to a trauma or death in the family or of a loved one. Experiencing a traumatizing and terrifying ordeal can start depression much after the ordeal is over. Teens and those below 35 are more likely to be affected by depression. It is much more common for women than men.
