Depression Treatment

The exact causes of depression are really not known. Scientists have however developed medications to calm the mind and release anxiety.

Anti anxiety medications along with or without additional anti depressants can help to bring relief from depression. Chronic or depression that has been present for many years would take much more longer to cure completely. The medicines do help to prevent relapses and allow the person to think more logically which further helps to eliminate depression.

Depending on the condition of the patient, the doctor may prescribe anti depressants and anti anxiety medicines that should not be stopped unless the doctor advises to do so, even if the patient starts feeling much better. The longer medication period is to ensure that a relapse never occurs.

Patients who suffer from seasonal depression are sometimes given light therapy, which makes them feel the days are longer just like the spring or summer times. Medicines may be prescribed along with the light therapy.

Love and patience from the family members can go a long way in helping a depressed person to recover. Constant emotional support and encouragement is required. Showing that you care is very important in alleviating the mood of a depressed person. It might be hard for the family members sometime to even talk to a depressed person in order to avoid any flare ups in the mood or anxiety, but a consistent effort with a lot of patience is needed to really help a person recover from depression.

If the family members are not able to help, professional counselling must be sought. Professional talk therapy sessions along with medication can help to bring in control the mood swings of a depressed person. The family members can also learn from the talk therapy specialists on how to converse with a severely depressed person.

Above all, the patients taking anti depression medications must be closely watched and monitored. It has been found, that some medications create suicidal thoughts in the patients after starting the medication dose. There have been numerous instances of teenagers ending their lives after taking certain prescribed medications.
