Five Tips to Stay Healthy
As long as we have everything going fine with us, very often, we feel the health problems that we know or read about happen only to the other people. Everyday, millions of us read about road accidents in the newspapers never ever thinking that if we are not careful, some day someone else would be reading about us.
I am not here to scare you but just trying to highlight one fact: We should never think health problems happen only to the other people. Anyone who does not take care of his or her health is sure to suffer the consequences sooner or later. It does not remain a matter of “if”, it just becomes a matter of “when”.
Therefore, let me highlight the five things that if you take care for yourself, you can immensely increase your chances of leading a healthy and happy life. And, of course you know about these things but might have been postponing them.
1. Sleep
Sleep is one of the most ignored requirements of a good health. People like to “work hard” often at the expense of a good regular sleep.
According to the age, one needs to decide the number of hours to sleep.
Adults need 7-8 hours of sleep each night.
Teenagers and children 5 and above need to sleep for at least 9-10 hours every night.
Preschoolers and toddlers need to sleep 10-14 hours where as new borns sleep for 16-20 hours in a 24 hours period.
Sleep deprivation leads to:
a. Obesity
b. Diabetes
c. Lack of concentration
d. Becoming prone to causing more accidents
Just as sleeping for at least a minimum number of hours is important, avoiding over sleeping is also equally important. Excess sleeping every day also adds to obesity and increases the chances of becoming diabetic.
Our body needs food. It is a biological requirement. However, most of us often over eat and most often what one eats is not healthy food. People find the junk food always to be more tastier for some strange reason. Once we start eating healthy food that includes a lot of vegetables and fruits and foods with no or minimum sugars and fats, we would start appreciating not just the taste but the health benefits too.
Secondly, there are some “weight conscious” amongst us, who eat too little in order to lose weight or to avoid gaining weight. Not eating or artificially making oneself feel sated is not the right strategy to stay healthy. The body needs the nutrients to sustain life. Without the proper nutrients, the growth that should happen according to the age cannot just happen. A weak body also loses the immunity to fight the diseases and infections.
Therefore, eating healthy food and in the right portion size is the way to go!
3. Exercise
Exercise keeps the body and the mind healthy. It is rightly said, a healthy body bears a healthy mind. A healthy mind is a big asset to oneself and the society, helping a person to earn as well as enjoy what is earned.
Newborns and small babies do their exercises every day by moving their hands and their legs happily talking to their own selves in their baby language. Kids play whenever they get a chance and burn the calories they need to. These days, the curse of television and other activities and games that keep the kids indoors in the homes or at the daycares, has started taking a toll on the kids' health.
The adults know they need to exercise and many smart ones even do. The others either simply plan to exercise or just ignore it. This latter group needs to get up and get going before it gets too late.
4. Avoid Smoking
If you smoke, it is time to give up smoking. Trust me, you can do it. If you do not smoke, you are very smart. Do not try to start smoking even for fun or experimentation.
Smoking is not a biological need of the body and is one of the biggest harm so many people do to their health knowingly. The disadvantages of smoking are so many in number that it would be hard for me to list them out here.
5. Regular Health Checkups
Even if you are healthy, and do all the things I mentioned above, it is important to get an annual physical checkup and take the necessary immunization shots and vaccines. Sometimes there are genetic problems that keep building up inside the body and suddenly forces one to be rushed to the hospital. A regular check up can find out in advance and avoid diabetes, heart problems and other deadly health issues, even if they are hereditary.
