Eating Healthy
Its a common feeling that if the food tastes too good, it would have to be some kind of junk food that one should keep away from. Well, it is not always the case. Simple habits of cooking at home go a long way in establishing better eating habits and appreciation of food that is healthy and tasty.
The best diet is the one that is based on plants. A vegetarian diet can provide all the nutrients without the bad cholesterol parts that one would normally get in a diet that involves meat. This fact is now being understood by more and more families around the world. Even Michelle Obama, the First Lady of the US has decided to have her own kitchen garden in the back of the White House so that she can ensure the best vegetables and salads for her daughters. In the White House, the first family would get the best food anyway, but her action symbolizes the importance of a healthy diet that is cooked at home and eaten along with the whole family.
A vegetarian diet does not automatically become healthy. Most vegetrian dishes are prepared with a lot of fat added in the forms of oils. There is a lot of information on the web available about cooking healthy vegetarian food.
Most dietitions agree that red meat is best if avoided. High cholesterol levels are mostly found in the people eating red meat.
Healthy eating is not only about what we eat but also about how much we eat and when it is eaten. A healthy portion is balanced - it is neither to overfill your tummy nor to leave you feeling hungry at the end of the meal. If you are on a weight control regimen, it is important to make sure you do not starve yourself. Losing weight without eating anything does more harm than good and it invariably is gained back as soon as you are off of the not eating schedule. Moreover, a starvation program cannot last long by itself.
Healthy eating is always supplemented with an equally healthy does of exercise. Simply eating with no exercise cannot be called healthy regardless of the type of food eaten. If you can make a rough estimate of the calories you intake with food, you should make sure that your daily exercise and routine activities burn those calories away if you would not like to gain anymore weight.
Another factor that makes any food a little healthier is when it is eaten happily and as a choice - not something that one is like forced to eat. This is more important for kids who are forced many a times, to eat certain foods without they really liking the food. It is just the way one can present the food and its benefits and serving as their own example that kids would see and adopt that eating style in no time. When it becomes their choice, they are more likely to eat it happily and finish the portion that they are given.
As I said above, the habits in kids are more governed by the examples they observe from their parents. Constant lecturing to the kids only make them more averse to what you want them to do. Therefore, inculcating healthy eating habits can be done only by example. If you eat a lot of salads and plant based foods and tell them how happy and healthy you feel from that, the kids would try to emulate that and get into the habit of eating healthy in no time.
